Anna’s fitting the bill / Ghostbusters?
13 Oct, 08

IT’S difficult to get typecast as a comedy ghost-botherer, but Anna Friel has done just that.

The offensively hot actress, 32, plays a girlfriend who is constantly being brought back to life or killed in TV’s Pushing Daisies.

Now she has been approached to play the first female Ghostbuster in the third movie of the series.

And Bill Murray, 58 – who will reprise his role as Peter Venkman – is chuffed to the cheggars. He said: “I think it would be funny to have a girl Ghostbuster.”

Slovakia snubs its chief Oscar contender
13 Oct, 08

It is the most successful homegrown film in Slovakia’s history, but historical epic Bathory has failed to secure the country’s Oscar slot because it is not deemed Slovakian enough.

The film, the story of the infamous Countess Elizabeth Bathory, known as the greatest murderess in the history of mankind, has been seen by 1.5m viewers in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. It meets the criteria for the Oscars because its director and writer are Slovakian, but that hasn’t been enough to persuade the Slovak Film and Television Academy to put it forward.

The panel have instead plumped for Juraj Lehotsky’s documentary Blind Loves, about the romantic lives of four sightless people. Critics of the move say it robs Slovakia of a more realistic shot at an Oscar than the country has had in a long time.

On a (Not So) Routine Expedition

Diablo Cody on the set of ‘Land of the Lost’ — The writer goes behind the scenes of the ’70s remake with Will Ferrell and Danny McBride

Marshall, Will, and Holly: These three simple names are a generational mantra of sorts. Recite them in front of any American who was reared in the ’70s and you’re likely to elicit an immediate (sung!) response: ”On a routine expedition…”

New picture from “Land of the Lost”
18 Jul, 08

LAND OF THE LOST
Starring Will Ferrell, Danny McBride, Anna Friel
Directed by Brad Silberling

The beloved ’70s show about a family trapped in an alternate universe gets a big-budget revamp. But sorry, Gen-Xers: No retro-cheesy F/X. ”The dinosaurs can’t be wagging their tails like puppies,” says Silberling (Moonlight Mile). ”They have to be f—ing brutal.” Still, Ferrell promises this Land hasn’t lost its roots. ”We still have Chaka and the Sleestaks that move way too slow,” he says. (Hits theaters July 17, 2009)
At Comic-Con: Silberling and cast will debut the teaser trailer.

Hollywood Reporter review of “Bathory”
9 Jul, 08

Bottom Line: Breathless, bloody and barmy sex and swordplay epic that remains a hoot in spite of itself.

By Ray Bennett
Venue: Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

KARLOVY VARY, Czech Republic — Legend has it that Countess Elizabeth Bathory was a murdering monster, the scourge of 16th century Europe, slaughtering virgin girls by the score and bathing in their blood in order to stay young. Slovak director Juraj Jabubisko’s over-the-top English-language epic “Bathory” says history got her all wrong: She was the victim of a terrible libel.

Colorful, bloodthirsty and absurdly comic, the film had its world premiere at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and could reap substantial international boxoffice rewards from indulgent audiences with a taste for that kind of thing.
